Our Favorite Movie Musicals of All Time

While we know not everyone grew up in a musical house like we did, it’s never too late to get into them! Here, we’re rounding up our favorite (and arguably the best) movie musicals of all time. Time to get watching!

Bye Bye Birdie

Best Musicals of All Time

BEST SONG: “Honestly Sincere”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “The next time I have a daughter, I hope it’s a boy!” -Harry McAfee

And if you ship Kim McAfee with Hugo Peabody, (and we say this with love), I’m not quite sure we can be friends anymore.

Best Musicals of All Time

BEST SONG: “Beauty School Drop-Out”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “Tell me about it, stud.” -Sandy Olsson

Frenchie not being able to make up her mind about her life/future is literally all of us. Oh, and #PINKLADIESFORLIFE.

Mamma Mia!

Best Musicals of All Time

FAVORITE QUOTE“We danced on the beach, and we kissed on the beach, and…dot, dot, dot.” -Sophie

We’re all either a Rosie or a Tanya at all times, there is no in-between. And if you ever have to plan one of our Bachelorette parties, make sure it’s exactly like Sophie’s (oh, & don’t forget to include the men climbing up rocks part).

Best Musicals of All Time

BEST SONG: “Welcome to the 60’s”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “Devil’s Child! Devil’s Child!” -Prudy Pingleton to Penny

Saying we struggle everytime with which guy we’d pick is the understatement of the YEAR…Corny Collins? Seaweed? Link Larkin?

Moulin Rouge!

Best Musicals of All Time

BEST SONG: “Your Song”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” -Christian

The costumes, the cast, and the music are all PERFECTION. You’ll never find a man like Christian (Ewan McGregor).

West Side Story

Best Musicals of All Time

BEST SONG: “Cool” or “America”

HONORABLE MENTION: Not sure the dance scene in the gym has an official song, but that scene is one of our favorites in the entire movie.

FAVORITE QUOTE: “I and Velma ain’t dumb.” -Graziella

All we can say is, get yourself a man like Riff.

Singin’ in the Rain

Best Musicals of All Time

BEST SONG: “Singin’ in the Rain”

Don Lockwood: “Call me a cab.”

Cosmo Brown: “Okay, you’re a cab.”

Gene Kelly’s dancing skills are more than enough to get us to watch.

Into the Woods

Best Musicals of All Time

BEST SONG: “Agony”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “I was raised to be charming, not sincere.” -The Prince (Chris Pine)

Chris Pine singing…in hot outfits…as a prince…I mean c’moooon.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

BEST SONG: “Sobbin’ Women”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “There wasn’t an F name in the Bible, so they named him Frankensense, because he smelled so sweet.” -Caleb

Okay, so the premise of this movie probably wouldn’t hold up today, but all that aside, the barn dance scene makes this worth the watch alone. SO good.

BEST SONG: “Cell Block Tango”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but if Jesus Christ lived in Chicago today, and he had come to me and he had five thousand dollars, let’s just say things would have turned out differently.” -Billy Flynn

This cast is TOP NOTCH. And when you throw in murder, song & dance, and Catherine Zeta-Jones? We’re sold.

The Sound of Music

BEST SONG: “Edelweiss” (however, MANY will dispute that…)

Captain von Trapp: “It’s the dress. You’ll have to put on another one before you meet the children.”

Maria: “But I don’t have another one. When we entered the abbey our worldly clothes were given to the poor.”

Captain von Trapp: “What about this one?”

Maria: “The poor didn’t want this one.”

Totally pulling a Fraulein Maria and sewing matching outfits for my children out of curtains. Sorry, kids, in advance.

Meet Me in St. Louis

BEST SONG: “Meet Me In St. Louis, Louis”

Tootie: “Poor Margeretha, I’ve never seen her look so pale.”

Mr. Neely The Iceman: “The sun oughta do her some good.”

Tootie: “I suspect she won’t live through the night, she has four fatal diseases.”

Mr. Neely The Iceman: “And it only takes one.”

Tootie: “But she’s going to have a beautiful funeral, in a cigar box my Papa gave me, all wrapped up in silver paper.”

Mr. Neely The Iceman: “That’s the way to go, if you have to go.”

Tootie: “Oh, she has to go.”

Being raised in St. Louis (as well as in a home that watched each and every musical we could get our hands on), this movie gives us all the warm and fuzzy feels.

White Christmas

BEST SONG: “Sisters” (especially when Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye re-enact the performance)

FAVORITE QUOTE:  “My dear partner, when what’s left of you gets around to what’s left to be gotten, what’s left to be gotten won’t be worth getting, whatever it is you’ve got left.” -Phil Davis

BEST SONG: “All Er Nothin'”

Will: “Now that I got that fifty dollars, you name the date.”

Ado Annie: “August 15th.”

Will: “Why August 15th?”

Ado Annie: “Because that was the first day I’se kissed!”

Will: “Oh was it? I didn’t remember that!”

Ado Annie: “You wasn’t there.”

One of my first role models as a young girl? Ado Annie…duh. She is the queen of sass and basically just everything.

The King and I

BEST SONG: “Getting to Know You”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!” -The King

Only Deborah Kerr could warm the cold King’s heart…makes us cry every time.

La La Land

BEST SONG: “City of Stars”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “People love what other people are passionate about.” -Mia

Not the best singing and dancing (just TBH), but who needs it when you have Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as your leading actors? Also v inspiring for people trying to make it out there doing what they love.

BEST SONG: “Camelot”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “Proposition: I’m a king, not a man. And a very civilized king. Could it possibly be civilized to destroy the thing I love? Did they ask for this calamity? Can passion be selected?” -King Arthur

Richard Harris is EVERYTHING in this film. You may know him as the OG Dumbledore, but he will forever be King Arthur in our hearts.

Across the Universe

BEST SONG: “Hey, Jude”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “Music’s the only thing that makes sense anymore, man. Play it loud enough, it keeps the demons at bay.” -JoJo

If you don’t like The Beatles, you won’t like this movie. But who doesn’t like The Beatles?!

Mary Poppins

BEST SONG: “A Spoon Full of Sugar” or “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and – SNAP – the job’s a game!” -Mary Poppins

If we could clone Jane and Michael and have them as our children, we would do it. Not kidding.

The Wizard of Oz

BEST SONG: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”

FAVORITE QUOTE: “There’s no place like home.” -Dorothy

Did anyone else want Dorothy to end up with the Scarecrow? WE CAN’T BE ALONE IN THIS.
